I have many muses for blog posts, and books are certainly one of my favorite sources. I just started reading a book called Emotional Intelligence Coaching and I came across a very interesting formula for performance first addressed by W. Timothy Gallwey in the book The Inner Game of Tennis.
Gallwey developed a very neat formula for identifying the main constructs of performance:
Performance (P) = Potential (p) – Interference (i)
According to this formula, and basic knowledge of arithmetics, Performance can be increased by (1) increasing potential and/or (2) decreasing interference. So let’s take away the math and explain what that really means!
First, let’s define each construct in Gallwey’s formula:
- Performance is defined as “the accomplishment of a given task measured against preset known standards of accuracy, completeness, cost, and speed.”
- Potential is defined as “existing in possibility: capable of development into actuality”
- Interference is defined as “something that hinders, obstructs, or impedes”
Working the formula backward would read something like this: if I remove all psychological & physical obstacles (interference) from my path to greatness (potential), I will accomplish what I set my mind to (performance).
Inspired by Gallwey’s performance formula, here’s my new formula:
